Landscaping Ideas for Pool Areas

If you have a pool, turn it into luxury by surrounding it with lush plants. But you should choose plants that are near a pool or hot tub carefully. Something attractive at 2 feet tall can grow quickly and shed leaves and debris in your pool in just a few years. Research the best plants, shrubs, trees, and ornamentals that will survive and even thrive when planted near a saltwater or chlorine pool. Whether you are choosing plants for privacy or landscaping and pools, there are three main considerations when choosing plants for your pool area:

  • They need to be consistent, balanced and blend in with the rest of your garden and home.
  • They must be easy to maintain and safe for children and pets.
  • They must be able to grow well in their native climate or in the microclimates on your property.
Here is a selection of plants to decorate your pool, adding color, texture, and aroma to your garden.
  • Succulents are becoming increasingly popular and are incorporated with other plants in the front and back yards. That means they can grow poolside, where they can be foundation plants that are evergreen (or whatever color they are), sculptural, and hardy. Just make sure succulents planted near pools and spas don’t have thorns (thorns or needles) that could accidentally injure children and bathers.
  • Ornamental Grasses: Ornamental grasses can be easy to care for and visually appealing around swimming pools. These types of grasses aren’t the lawn grasses you may be familiar with: ornamental grasses include sedge, rush, and bamboo.
  • Vines: Vines climb walls and weave their way through fences and trellises. Most grow quickly and can quickly help form some form of privacy screen around pool areas or can be trained as living roofs on pergolas and pergolas.
  • Drought Tolerant Plants: If you live in an arid climate or in a drought region, design the landscape with irrigation needs in mind.
  • Container gardens: Container gardens can be beautifully designed with plants that have similar care needs. They can also be postponed depending on the season, unexpected weather, and special occasions. Choose hardy plants that follow the suspense, fill-and-spill design technique, or a type of plant that will stand upright in containers.
